Cinema goers from Balbriggan in north County Dublin are to receive an enhanced movie experience after the Omniplex Group, Ireland’s largest cinema operator, announced it has bought the Quayside cinema for circa €1m. The 5 screen cinema on Mill Street will now receive a €500,000 makeover that will include a full refurbishment and all its screens will be converted to digital projection.

Formerly called The Savoy, the Quayside cinema opened in 2007 but was transferred to NAMA after its owner’s the McEnaney Construction Limited went into liquidation in 2011. The deal safeguards the future of the Quayside and the jobs of its 8 employees. 4 new jobs will be created following extensive renovations, which are expected to start as soon. The cinema will continue to operate during the refurbishment

Commenting on the investment Paul Anderson, Managing Director of Omniplex Group, said: “Balbriggan has undergone a large expansion and population growth over the last few years, so there is high demand for a cinema in the town. Omniplex has never had a cinema in Balbriggan, so the Quayside represents a valuable acquisition to our portfolio, which we were very pleased to secure from NAMA. Cinema goers in the town will soon have one of Ireland’s most modern cinemas.”

The acquisition the Quayside brings the number of cinemas operated by Omniplex to 22, across the whole island of Ireland. Booking of films at the cinema will soon be undertaken through Omniplex’s main website For now details can still be found on
